As summer turns to fall, people are definitely thinking skiing! Our pre-season bookings, even this far out, have been strong and while we have still have openings, the number of available dates for heli-skiing are going more quickly than in the past. Our backcountry yurt is fully booked though we are taking wait list reservations in case there is a cancellation or we decide to offer a few additional trips.
In addition to the Barron yurt being sold out, most weekends in February and March are also sold out or close to it. Available dates for our heli programs are as follows:
Jan 24: room for 1 group of 4 left
Jan 27th-Jan 29th: room for 2 groups of 4 a day
Jan 30th room for 3 groups of 4 a day
Jan 31st: room for 2 groups of 4 a day
Feb 6th: room for 2 groups of 4
Feb 12th room for 3 groups of 4
Feb 19th room for 2 groups of 4
Mar 10 room for 1 group of 4
Mar 13th room for 1 groups of 4
March 23rd is our last scheduled day of operations for 2014.
We are taking reservations for 2015, and have a few trips on the books for the yurt already.

Tomorrow is that somewhat bittersweet (more sweet than bitter) last day of operations for the 2013 season. Glad to be closing it out with deep pow, sunshine and happy guests!
Thanks to all the folks who made the trek to the end of the road to ski or ride with us this season. Also thanks to our sponsors: BCA
, Helly Hansen
, K2 Skis
, K2 Snowboarding
, and Smith Optics
. And our partners at the the Freestone Inn
, Goat's Beard Mountain Supplies,
and of course, the Mazama Store
who made sure no guest went hungry at lunch or at the yurt.

Looking ahead to 2014, we anticipate the 2014 season to run from January 24th to March 23rd, 2014. This shortened season is due to our user day issue. We'd like to run longer but that is not possible at this time nor may ever be.
In addition to the Barron yurt being sold out, many weekends in February and March are also sold out or close to it. Blackout dates for our heli programs are as follows:
February 4-6th, room for 1 group of 4 left
Feb 9-11th sold out
Feb 13-15th sold out
Feb 21-23 sold out
Feb 28-March 1 sold out
March 7-8 sold out
March 13-16 sold out
Don't delay getting in touch if you are considering a trip to the North Cascades in 2014.

Wow. That went fast. Thanks to the need to reallocate user days to our alpine program, the limited 2014 season at the Barron Yurt is sold out at this time. We are taking names for a wait list in the event of a cancellation on a first come, first served basis. We are also taking reservations for 2015 at the yurt at this time.
Our heli-ski programs are also booking at a quick pace, with select February and March dates already gone. Book (make a deposit) before June 1, 2013 and we'll give you this year's rates for our standard heli-skiing programs. We anticipate our heli-ski season will run January 24th to March 23rd.

Talk about a lump of coal in the old stocking. We have encountered a new challenge here at North Cascade Heli: User days. We are out of them and can no longer take additional reservations even though we have plenty of openings on our 70-day schedule. This issue DOES NOT AFFECT already booked trips for this season.
How did this come to be?
First of all, the definition of a user day is counted as one person stepping on to public national forest land for any given amount of time on that particular day. Whether you arrive at our backcountry yurt in the late afternoon and pop open a beer on the couch without making a single turn, or ski 15 runs down Spire Gully above the hairpin curve on Highway 20, each of those activities constitutes a user day.
And due to the modest growth of our operation, especially the successful popularity of our backcountry yurt program, those days are now at a premium. Going ahead, we foresee increased costs for our guests with a decrease in availability and program variety.
The Methow Valley Ranger District of the United States Forest Service has been unable or unwilling to allocate more user days so we can offer our services to more guests. Currently, we have only 1,050 user days available, despite terms of our operating permit that allow us to: Operate from December 1 to April 30, utilize two helicopters and run two backcountry ski huts. This year we will be open for roughly 70 days, run one helicopter and operate the yurt at Barron. The yurt alone this year will use over 600 days.
It is a frustrating situation and we would like to apologize for not being able to book more reservations at this time. We are placing inquiries onto a wait list as additional user days are freed up by not being used, most likely in the case of weather days.
If you are concerned about this unfortunate scenario, you are welcome to contact us for more information.
You can also convey your concerns to:
Mike Liu, Methow Valley district ranger, (509) 996-4000, firstname.lastname@example.org

Thank you for your time, consideration and understanding regarding this matter.
